Periodontal Probes

Dental periodontal probes are essential tools used by dentists and hygienists to assess the health of a patient's gums and the depth of the pockets between the teeth and gums. These probes help in detecting periodontal disease, measuring the attachment level of the gums, and monitoring any changes in the condition of the tissues around the teeth. The probes are typically graduated with markings to measure the depth of the pockets, which indicates the presence of gum disease or infection.

Types of Periodontal Probes:

Williams Probe – A basic, common probe with millimeter markings (1–10) to measure pocket depth.
UNC-15 Probe (University of North Carolina Probe) – Has 15 millimeter markings for more precise measurements.
Michigan O Probe – Often used for both measuring pockets and marking gum recession, it has specific measurements at 1mm intervals.
Goldman-Fox Probe – A probe with markings at 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm for easier pocket depth assessment.
Marquis Probe – Known for its color-coded bands, which indicate different measurement zones (such as 3mm, 6mm, and 9mm).
CP-12 Probe (California Probe) – Features 12mm graduated markings and is widely used for general periodontal assessments.
Benex Probe – A color-coded probe used to assess pocket depth, featuring distinctive color markers for easier use.
PCP-12 Probe (Parnell Clinical Probe) – Another color-coded probe with more detailed markings for easy pocket measurement.

These probes may vary in design, markings, and materials, but they all serve the same fundamental purpose of measuring the health of periodontal tissues.
