Osteotomes

Dental osteotomes are specialized surgical instruments used in dentistry, primarily for bone manipulation and compression, especially in implant site preparation and some orthodontic procedures. They are designed to cut or reshape bone without removing bone tissue (unlike drills).

Osteotomes are typically hand-held instruments with a handle and a blade or working end. The working end can vary in shape and size depending on the intended use. They are used with gentle force, often tapped with a mallet, to compress or move bone.

Types of Dental Osteotomes:

Osteotomes are generally classified based on the shape of their working end:

Chisel Osteotomes: These have a flat, chisel-like blade used for cutting or splitting bone. They are often used to expand narrow ridges or create space for implants.
Bone Condensing Osteotomes: These have a tapered or rounded end designed to compress bone, increasing its density. They are commonly used in implant site preparation to improve bone stability. They may also be referred to as bone tappers or compactors.
Ridge Expansion Osteotomes: These are designed with a wider, flat working end to expand the alveolar ridge (the part of the jawbone that supports teeth) when it is too narrow for implant placement.
Sinus Lift Osteotomes: These are specifically designed for performing sinus lift procedures, where the maxillary sinus membrane is gently elevated to create space for bone grafting in preparation for implants. They often have depth markings.
Other Classifications/Features:

Taper: Osteotomes can have varying degrees of taper, which affects how they engage with the bone.
Size: Osteotomes are available in different diameters and lengths to suit various anatomical situations.
Straight vs. Curved: Some osteotomes have a straight working end, while others are curved for better access to certain areas.
Handle Design: Handles can vary in shape and texture to provide a comfortable and secure grip.
